Forensic civil engineering investigates the causes of failure of a structure by observing wreckage, collecting evidence from them and analysing them using the principles of engineering. It is essential when the failure of the structure causes personal injury, damage to property or economic loss. The investigative report is then used in view of improving the performance of the building or assisting the court of law in determining the cause of the accident.
Dr. TPS has lead and been part of many forensic investigation teams examining several infrastructure failures due to manmade and natural causes. He led the team from National Institute of Technology Calicut that investigated the kadalundi train disaster which occurred on 22nd June 2001, which claimed the life of 59 people and left 300 injured.
